Basilica of Santa Maria in Via Lata Guided Tour with the underground areas

According to historical records, the Church of Santa Maria in Via Lata was built in the late 7th century AD under the patronage of Pope Sergius I, who designated it as a diakonia.

Originally, the structure was designed to serve as a place of spiritual guidance, built using existing buildings from Roman times. Later a medieval church was erected, with the façade facing the present Roman College Square. Over time the building underwent multiple renovations until it acquired its characteristic Baroque style during the reign of Pope Alexander VII Chigi.

Pietro da Cortona was commissioned to build the façade, and he also took on the task of bringing to light the underground area and setting up a route for pilgrims visiting the holy place believed to be the home of the Apostles.

• Due to the specific nature of the sites, there are specific limitations for visits by people with different abilities.
• Maximum group size per entry: 15 people. Larger groups will be allowed to enter in a staggered manner.
