Life and death
Gardens
The huge complex of the Vatican Gardens originates from the first little garden and orchard implanted here in 1279 by the will of Pope Nicholas III.
Composed today of various areas (English Garden, Italian Garden, Garden of the Pope etc), they are rich in numerous fountains (the Fountain of the Eagle, the Fontanone del Gianicolo and that one of Galera, a spectacular ship that shoots jets of water from its cannons).
You will also see some ruins of the ancient Leonine Walls, built in order to protect the Vatican area, and the Radio Tower (seat of Radio Vatican).
Surrounded by the most various plants and flowers, starting from the exotic species imported from America and Asia to some examples of the Mediterranean flora, you will lose the sense of time and you will discover how faith, art and nature can live together in harmony. In the grassy area it is also designed the papal coat of arms with the Keys of St. Peter.
Necropolis Via Triumphalis
In 2003, on one of the Roman consular roads, during the works for the construction of the Santa Rosa Parking, it was discovered a beautiful Necropolis that preserves numerous sepulchral buildings and individual tombs dating between the I century BC and the IV century AD, marked by stelae, altars and inscriptions, and an area destined to cremations.
Thanks to catwalks, thematic showcases, touch screen monitors and 3D reconstructions, you can closely admire a whole world hidden under our feet but that still has a lot to reveal...
