Guide to the mysteries of St. Peter's Basilica

St. Peter's Basilica

St. Peter's Basilica is the most recognized symbol of Christianity in the world, taking its name from the first apostle of Jesus and the first Catholic pope in history. During the multilingual guided tour conducted by a professional local guide, visitors will explore the naves and chapels that compose this majestic Renaissance church, admiring its world-famous dome from the inside and its many artworks. Your guide's informative commentary will be accompanied by curiosities and answers to any questions visitors might have.

History

Located on Vatican hill near the ancient circus of Nero, St. Peter's Basilica is built on a highly spiritual place. In this spot, according to traditions, humble Galilean fisherman and faithful apostle Peter was crucified upside down as a sign of respect, because he considered himself unworthy of being crucified in the same way as his Master. The church was originally constructed in 320 AD as requested by Emperor Constantine, and today's basilica has been rebuilt on the same foundations during the Renaissance with the contribution of the greatest architects and artists of the time, such as Bramante, Bernini, Maderno and Michelangelo. Thanks to this basilica, Saint Peter's legacy continues to inspire believers and popes who succeeded him.

Masterpieces

A professional guide will lead you in an artistic and religious discovery of the masterpieces hidden in St. Peter's Basilica. Among the most symbolic pieces you will find the papal altar, located on Saint Peter's burial site as a memento to the Church's original mission, as well as Michelangelo's moving marble sculpture Pietà. The facade, executed in the 17th century, is a work of art in itself: the shape of the evocative colonnade by Bernini and Maderno remembers an embrace, as a welcome to believers and tourists visiting the capital. The Vatican Grottoes are another unmissable stop for pilgrims, as a unique possibility to pray on the Tomb of St. Peter and later popes.
