History

Located on Vatican hill near the ancient circus of Nero, St. Peter's Basilica is built on a highly spiritual place. In this spot, according to traditions, humble Galilean fisherman and faithful apostle Peter was crucified upside down as a sign of respect, because he considered himself unworthy of being crucified in the same way as his Master. The church was originally constructed in 320 AD as requested by Emperor Constantine, and today's basilica has been rebuilt on the same foundations during the Renaissance with the contribution of the greatest architects and artists of the time, such as Bramante, Bernini, Maderno and Michelangelo. Thanks to this basilica, Saint Peter's legacy continues to inspire believers and popes who succeeded him.

1. Tickets are valid for the selected time slot. Guided tour to St. Peter's Basilica is available on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 10:30 am, 1:30 pm, and 3:30 pm (only from April 1st to September 30th), Wednesday at 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm (only from April 1st to September 30th), and Sunday at 1:30 pm.
2. Once tickets are booked, selected date and time are binding. Please arrive in time at meeting point under St. Peter's Basilica right colonnade in St. Peter's Square. In order to reach the meeting point, walk on Via di Porta Angelica side, enter the colonnade after the newsstand, turn right, go straight ahead past the barrier with the “Porta di Bronzo” sign until you reach another, Police-controlled barrier.
3. Tickets will be sent via email within 24-48 hours of the purchase (on weekdays) with instructions on how to get there and what to do to enter.
4. Visitors are invited to dress appropriately to enter the Basilica.
